New BMW X5 2027: electric iX5, plug-in hybrid and release date
The new BMW X5 arrives with five powertrains, including an electric iX5 rated at up to 850 km WLTP and a plug-in hybrid that covers up to 106 km without petrol. What changes, when it arrives and whether it is worth the wait.

BMW unveiled the X5 G65, the fifth generation of its large SUV, on 30 June 2026 at its Spartanburg plant in the United States, where the model has been built since 1999. It takes its design and technology from the Neue Klasse, the BMW generation that began with the BMW iX3.
It is the brand's first model offered with five powertrains, from petrol to hydrogen, including a fully electric iX5. This guide uses the figures published by BMW and shows what changes compared with the current model, which we offer right now.
- of WLTP range for the iX5
- 850km
- on electric power for the plug-in hybrid
- 106km
- to go from 10 to 80% on a rapid charger
- 22min
What changes on the new BMW X5?
The front end stands more upright. The kidney grille, taller than it is wide, lights up, and two X-shaped light signatures, a first for BMW, give the car its face. From the side, the door handles give way to black fins that BMW calls Winglets. A light press is enough, and the door opens with electric assistance.

- 4.99 m long, 2.00 m wide and 1.75 m high
- 3.04 m wheelbase and five seats
- Eleven paint colours and wheels up to 23 inches, a first for the model
Beneath the body, the electronics move up a generation too. The cockpit, the driver assistance systems and, on the iX5, the traction management all come straight from the Neue Klasse.
Which powertrains does the new X5 offer?
The range covers every energy source. The petrol and diesel versions keep a straight-six engine, backed by a small 48-volt electric motor, and every version announced for Europe has all-wheel drive.
- Petrol: X5 40 xDrive, 400 hp, 580 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 s
- Diesel: X5 40d xDrive, 313 hp, 670 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 s
- Plug-in hybrid: X5 50e xDrive, 489 hp, 700 Nm, up to 106 km on electric power
- Sporty hybrid: X5 M60e xDrive, 612 hp, 800 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 s
- Electric: iX5 60 xDrive, 578 hp, 805 Nm, up to 850 km of WLTP range
- Hydrogen: fuel-cell iX5 Hydrogen, announced for later, up to 750 km according to BMW
The Spartanburg plant is the first in the group to assemble these five technologies on a single line. The iX5 is also the first electric car built there, with batteries assembled in South Carolina.

What range does the electric BMW iX5 offer?
The iX5 60 xDrive carries a battery with 141.2 kWh of usable capacity, made of new 12 cm-tall round cells that BMW uses here for the first time. The brand quotes up to 850 km under the WLTP standard, a little less with large wheels and options.
- Range: up to 850 km WLTP depending on equipment
- Consumption: from 19.3 kWh per 100 km
- Power: 578 hp and 805 Nm, with one motor on each axle
- Performance: 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 s, 210 km/h top speed
- Towing: up to 2,700 kg
In its June press kit, with figures that were still provisional, BMW mentioned 845 km. Its Luxembourg, Belgian and French websites now show up to 850 km.
As with any electric car, range drops on the motorway and in cold weather. Weighing 2,900 kg with a driver on board, the iX5 remains a big SUV, and its consumption climbs quickly at higher speeds.
How long does the iX5 take to charge?
The iX5 runs on an 800-volt system and accepts up to 460 kW on a compatible rapid charger. A built-in switching system keeps it compatible with 400-volt rapid chargers.
- Rapid charging: 22 minutes from 10 to 80%
- 298 to 363 km of range added in 10 minutes, depending on equipment
- 22 kW AC charging as standard, or 7 hours 30 minutes for a full charge
- 3.7 kW to power an electrical device from the car
With the BMW Wallbox Professional, the iX5 can also send its energy back to your home or to the grid, if your installation and the rules in your country allow it. The cable is stored under the bonnet, in a 53-litre compartment.
What electric range does the X5 plug-in hybrid offer?
The X5 50e xDrive pairs a 313 hp six-cylinder petrol engine with a 197 hp electric motor, for 489 hp in total. Its 26.5 kWh usable battery lets it drive up to 106 km on electric power under the WLTP standard, at up to 140 km/h.
It charges at 11 kW, taking 3 hours for a full battery. The X5 M60e xDrive uses the same battery with 612 hp, and BMW gives it up to 98 km on electric power in its still provisional figures.

Compared with the current hybrid model, power stays the same and electric range is similar. The new one mainly gains space in the back and towing capacity.
- 489 hp for both
- 525 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, against 500 litres
- 3,300 kg of towing capacity, against 2,700 kg

What is the interior like?
The cockpit adopts the Panoramic iDrive from the Neue Klasse. A projection called Panoramic Vision runs along the whole lower edge of the windscreen. Below it, the 17.9-inch central display has cut-out edges.
- 3D head-up display as standard
- 14.6-inch passenger screen as an option, a first for the model
- Optional slate trim, a first for any car maker
- Panoramic glass roof as standard on the iX5

The boot holds 655 litres, and up to 1,850 litres with the rear seats folded. On the plug-in hybrids, the battery reduces it to 525 litres.

When does the new BMW X5 arrive?
Production started in August 2026 in Spartanburg. BMW has set the launch of the petrol and diesel versions for 28 November 2026. The iX5 and the plug-in hybrids have been available to order since 8 October 2026 and arrive in early 2027.

For the iX5 Hydrogen, BMW has not yet given a date, and the specialist press, such as BMW Blog, expects it around 2028. On its prototype, the manufacturer quotes up to 750 km and a hydrogen refill in under five minutes, with a fuel cell developed with Toyota.
How much does the new BMW X5 cost?
At the time of writing, BMW does not show any prices on the model pages of its Luxembourg, Belgian and French websites. The price is available through its configurator or from a dealer, and it varies with the country, taxes and the options chosen.
With a subscription, the question works differently. You pay a fixed amount each month that includes insurance, maintenance, tyres and taxes, without buying the car or worrying about selling it later.
Should you wait for the new X5?
It depends on the energy you are after. The electric version only exists from this generation onwards. If that is the one you want, you will have to wait until early 2027, plus the delivery time.
As a plug-in hybrid, the gap is narrower. The current model offers the same power and a similar electric range, and it is available straight away. The new one brings a slightly larger boot, a higher towing capacity and the Neue Klasse interior.
The BMW X5 plug-in hybrid at Turismo
At Turismo, the current-generation 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid is available straight away for customers in Luxembourg, Belgium and France. It comes with the M Sport package and Individual trim, in Frozen Pure Grey with white leather upholstery, air suspension, a panoramic roof and ventilated seats.
The term runs from 24 to 60 months and the mileage allowance is 1,000 km per month. The monthly payment covers assistance, taxes, insurance, manufacturer maintenance and summer and winter tyres. Fuel, charging, delivery and any kilometres beyond the allowance are at your expense.
